Sural Nerve

The sural nerve is a purely sensory peripheral nerve that provides sensation to the posterolateral lower leg, lateral ankle, and outer foot. It typically forms from contributions of the medial sural cutaneous branch of the tibial nerve and a communicating branch of the common fibular nerve, then travels along the calf before reaching the foot. In neuroscience and clinical research, its accessible location makes it useful for sensory nerve-conduction studies, evaluation of peripheral neuropathy, and nerve biopsy or grafting procedures. Sural nerve measurements can help characterize axonal injury, demyelination, and patterns of nerve regeneration.

The Spared Nerve Injury (SNI) Model of Induced Mechanical Allodynia in Mice

2011

The Spared Nerve Injury animal model is described here as a mouse model of peripheral neuropathic pain following partial denervation of the sciatic nerve by lesioning the tibial and common peroneal nerve branches, leaving the remaining sural nerve intact. Behavioral modification resulting from mechanical allodynia is quantified by von Frey filaments.

Source: Sanchez, C. A., et al. Preparation of Peripheral Nerve Stimulation Electrodes for Chronic Implantation in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates vagus nerve stimulation in an awake rat. A rat with an implanted chronic peripheral nerve cuff electrode and trained in a lever press task is connected to a stimulus generator via an implanted head cap. The vagus nerve is stimulated immediately after each successful lever press, resulting in the expansion of the motor map.

Source: Svientek, S. R., et al. Fabrication of the Composite Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (C-RPNI) in the Adult Rat. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates the surgical construction of a composite regenerative peripheral nerve interface (C-RPNI) in a rat model of peripheral nerve injury. The procedure involves attaching a transected peroneal nerve to a muscle graft and overlaying it with a dermal skin graft to promote nerve regeneration. Over time, motor and sensory neurons...
