Ankyrin-g

Ankyrin-G is a cytoskeletal adaptor protein that organizes specialized membrane domains, making it essential for neuronal polarity and electrical signaling. In neurons, it anchors voltage-gated sodium channels, potassium channels, cell-adhesion molecules, and βIV-spectrin at the axon initial segment, where action potentials are initiated and maintained. This molecular scaffold also supports the organization of nodes of Ranvier along myelinated axons, helping coordinate rapid impulse conduction. Studying Ankyrin-G therefore clarifies how neurons establish axonal identity, regulate excitability, and maintain functional membrane architecture, with relevance to research on neural development and disorders involving disrupted neuronal signaling.
