Electrode Implantation

Electrode implantation is a neuroscience technique for placing conductive electrodes in or near neural tissue to record bioelectric signals, deliver stimulation, or both. Researchers position electrodes with stereotaxic guidance and secure them in defined brain regions, spinal pathways, or peripheral nerves; the electrodes detect voltage changes generated by neural activity or deliver controlled current that alters nearby cellular firing. Acute implants support targeted experiments, whereas chronic implants enable recording and stimulation over days or weeks. These preparations help map neural circuits, measure responses during behavior, evaluate therapies such as deep brain stimulation, and advance neuroprosthetic and brain-computer interface research.

This video demonstrates a technique for implanting an electrode assembly into a mouse brain. The assembly contains bipolar electrodes to record activity from the hippocampus and a reference electrode to obtain baseline activity from the cerebellum. An anesthetized mouse is placed on a stereotaxic frame, and the electrode assembly is implanted in the target brain region. The animal is then allowed to recover before performing electrophysiological recording.
