Epilepsy Monitoring Unit

An Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) is a specialized clinical setting that continuously records brain activity and patient behavior to evaluate suspected or established seizures. Using prolonged video-electroencephalography (EEG), clinicians correlate electrical patterns from scalp electrodes with observable events, often under carefully supervised changes in medication or sleep conditions to increase the likelihood of capturing an episode. EMU monitoring helps distinguish epileptic seizures from nonepileptic events, classify seizure types, localize regions involved in seizure generation, and guide treatment decisions. In neuroscience, these recordings provide valuable insight into abnormal network activity and can support surgical evaluation when seizures remain uncontrolled.

Robotic-Guided Stereoelectroencephalography for Invasive Epilepsy Monitoring

2025

This protocol presents robot-assisted stereo electroencephalography (sEEG), a method for the stereotactic implantation of intracerebral electrodes used for invasive seizure monitoring in patients with refractory epilepsy. Techniques incorporating stereotactic robotic guidance for sEEG are safe and precise and may improve surgical efficiency, especially when implanting greater numbers of electrodes.

This protocol describes a procedure to track the evolution of mesial network measures in temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) patients. It is based on the combination of intracranial recordings with a novel numerical technique for data analysis. Specifically, we present a protocol for network analyses of foramen ovale recordings.

2016

High Frequency Oscillations (HFOs) have emerged as presurgical biomarkers for the identification of the epileptogenic zone in pediatric patients with medically refractory epilepsy. A methodology for the noninvasive recording, detection, and localization of HFOs with simultaneous scalp electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) is presented.

2018

This manuscript describes a method of inducing status epilepticus by systemic pilocarpine injection and of monitoring spontaneous recurrent seizures in live animals using a wireless telemetry video and electroencephalogram system. This protocol can be utilized for studying the pathophysiologic mechanisms of chronic epilepsy, epileptogenesis, and acute seizures.
