Firing Frequency

Firing frequency is the rate at which a neuron generates action potentials over time, providing a fundamental measure of neural activity and communication. When synaptic inputs depolarize the membrane to threshold, voltage-gated sodium and potassium channels produce an action potential, while the refractory period limits how rapidly successive spikes can occur. Neurons can represent stimulus intensity, timing, and other information through changes in firing frequency, often alongside changes in which cells are active. Measuring firing frequency with electrophysiological recordings helps researchers characterize sensory processing, motor control, learning, disease-related activity, and the effects of drugs or neural stimulation.

Here we describe an adaptation of protocols used to induce homeostatic plasticity in neurons for the study of plasticity of astrocytic G protein-coupled receptors. Recently used to examine changes in astrocytic group I mGluRs in juvenile mice, the method can be applied to measure scaling of various astrocytic GPCRs, in tissue from adult mice in situ and in vivo, and to gain a better appreciation of the sensitivity of astrocytic receptors to changes in neuronal activity.

What is a Frequency Distribution

2023

A frequency is the number of times a value of the data occurs. The sum of all the frequency values represents the total number of students included in the sample. It is commonly used to group data of quantitative types. Frequency distributions can be displayed in a table, histogram, line graph, dot plot, or pie chart, just to name a few. A histogram is a graphical representation of tabulated frequencies, shown as adjacent rectangles, erected over discrete intervals (bins), with an area equal to...

Mean From a Frequency Distribution

2023

Sometimes, data gathered from an experiment on a large sample or population are organized into concise tables. In such cases, the frequency of the quantitative data set is plotted in the form of a table. Or else, the data values are grouped into the quantity’s intervals, which form classes, and their respective frequencies are known. That is, the data values are distributed over different categories or classes. This is known as frequency distribution. When such a data set is encountered, the...
