Left Paw Impairment

Left paw impairment is a reduction in the strength, coordination, sensation, or skilled use of an animal’s left forelimb, making it a measurable behavioral sign of nervous-system dysfunction. In rodents, left-paw performance depends largely on motor and sensory circuits in the right cerebral hemisphere, with signals traveling through partially crossed corticospinal pathways to control forelimb movement. Researchers assess this impairment using tasks such as skilled reaching, paw preference, cylinder exploration, and adhesive removal. These measurements help characterize brain injury, spinal-cord dysfunction, neurodegenerative disease, and recovery after rehabilitation or experimental treatment, providing functional evidence that complements anatomical and molecular analyses.

Classical forelimb asymmetry analysis of the cylinder test is routinely used to assess behavioural deficits in rats following brain injury or stroke; however, it fails to detect consistent deficits in mice. This study demonstrates that quantifying paw-dragging behaviour is a more sensitive analysis of brain injury in mice.

Thinking Too Much Impairs Decision-Making

Source: Peter Mende-Siedlecki & Jay Van Bavel—New York University When we are considering a tough choice between two or more attractive options, we often end up actively weighing the pros and cons of each alternative. By reflecting on their advantages and disadvantages, we attempt to fit a complex, subjective decision into an orderly set of criteria. However, research in psychology suggests that this sort of introspective approach might not always yield the most optimal outcomes.1 In other...

Electronic von Frey measurements are an effective and improved alternative to classical von Frey filaments, as they allow rapid and precise measurement of changes in rodent mechanical withdrawal thresholds to continuously applied pressure stimuli before and after an inflammatory event.

An Automated System for Sound Localization Testing in Hearing-Impaired Listeners

2026

This protocol introduces an automated sound localization testing system with precise loudspeaker placement and integrated response analysis, validated in normal-hearing participants and participants with single-sided deafness. It provides a reproducible method to assess spatial hearing and supports functional classification using the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework.

The following protocol describes the methodology for the acquisition and analysis of echocardiographic images used to obtain the Left Atrial Volume (LAV), Aorta (Ao) diameter, and Pulmonary Artery (PA) diameter in mice. This technique is a non-invasive, non-terminal procedure that allows assessment of the cardiopulmonary function.
