Long-term Potentiation

Long-term potentiation (LTP) is a persistent increase in synaptic strength after brief, coordinated activity, and it is a key model for how neural circuits change with experience. In many excitatory synapses, repeated stimulation activates NMDA receptors, allowing calcium ions to enter the postsynaptic neuron; calcium-dependent signaling then increases AMPA receptor number or function, strengthening transmission. LTP is studied extensively in the hippocampus and other brain regions to understand synaptic plasticity, learning, and memory. Its mechanisms also inform research on brain development, neurodegenerative disease, and disorders in which altered plasticity affects cognition or behavior.

Long-term Potentiation

Long-term potentiation, or LTP, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTP is the process of synaptic strengthening that occurs over time between pre- and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic strengthening of LTP works in opposition to the synaptic weakening of long-term depression (LTD) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory. Hebbian LTP LTP can occur when presynaptic...

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN Electric potential, also known as "voltage", measures the electric potential energy per unit charge. Electric field is a scalar quantity and is fundamental to many electrical effects. Like potential energy, what is physically meaningful is the difference in the electric potential. For example, the spatial variation in the electric potential is related to the electric...
