Minipig Model

A minipig model is a large-animal research system that uses miniature pigs to study human biology, disease, and treatment responses, with particular value in translational neuroscience. Minipigs provide a substantial brain for neuroimaging, electrophysiology, neurosurgical procedures, and device placement, while their gyrencephalic cortex and measurable behavioral responses support comparisons with human neural function. Researchers apply these models to investigate neurodegenerative disease, brain injury, neural circuits, and therapeutic interventions under controlled experimental conditions. Their size and anatomy can help evaluate safety, targeting, and performance before clinical studies, strengthening the bridge between laboratory findings and human neurological applications.

2016

A protocol establishing mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) isolated from the synovial fluid and bone marrow of minipigs and non-invasively collected using syringe aspiration is presented. Cellular phenotyping was performed using flow cytometry after cell isolation and in vitro cultivation of bone marrow and synovial fluids derived from MSCs.

Subdural Implantation of a Soft Electrocorticography Array for Cortical Electrophysiology Recording in Minipigs

2025

This video demonstrates the implantation of a soft electrocorticography array and the long-term cortical recordings in a minipig. It outlines the steps involved in surgically implanting the array over the minipig's auditory cortex and recording both baseline and sound stimulus-evoked neuronal action potentials.

Sterile Pericarditis in Aachener Minipigs As a Model for Atrial Myopathy and Atrial Fibrillation

2024

Tissue-engineered implants for reconstructive surgery rarely progress beyond preclinical trials due to laborious ex vivo culturing, which includes complex and expensive scaffold components. Here, we present a single-staged procedure designed for urinary diversion with an accessible collagen-based tubular scaffold containing autologous micrografts.
