Motor Neuron Stimulation

Motor neuron stimulation is the controlled activation of neurons that transmit signals from the central nervous system to skeletal muscles, making it a key approach for studying movement and neuromuscular function. Electrical or experimental stimuli depolarize the motor neuron membrane until it reaches threshold, generating an action potential that travels along the axon and triggers neurotransmitter release at the neuromuscular junction. This process initiates muscle fiber contraction and enables researchers to examine motor control, synaptic signaling, and circuit organization. Motor neuron stimulation also supports investigations of neurological disease, muscle weakness, rehabilitation strategies, and technologies that restore or augment movement.

Source: Curado, M. et. al., Non-Invasive Electrical Brain Stimulation Montages for Modulation of Human Motor Function. J. Vis. Exp. (2016)This video demonstrates the setup and mechanism of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) for modulating human motor function. By placing the anode over the primary motor cortex and the cathode over the contralateral supraorbital area, the targeted electrical stimulation increases cortical excitability, enhancing motor neuron activity and improving...

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) has proven to be a useful tool in investigating the role of the articulatory motor cortex in speech perception. This article describes how to record motor evoked potentials (MEPs) from the lip muscles and how to disrupt the motor lip representation using repetitive TMS.

In animals with large identified neurons (e.g. mollusks), analysis of motor pools is done using intracellular techniques1,2,3,4. Recently, we developed a technique to extracellularly stimulate and record individual neurons in Aplysia californica5. We now describe a protocol for using this technique to uniquely identify and characterize motor neurons within a motor pool.

Source: Fritsch, B. et al. Transcranial Electrical Brain Stimulation in Alert Rodents. J. Vis. Exp. (2017)This video demonstrates the implantation of electrodes and the application of transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) to the motor cortex of alert rats. It outlines the steps involved in electrode placement, stimulation delivery, and the resulting neuronal and microglial activation, highlighting its neurotherapeutic potential.

Transcranial Alternating Current Stimulation (tACS) allows the modulation of cortical excitability in a frequency-specific fashion. Here we show a unique approach which combines online tACS with single pulse Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) in order to "probe" cortical excitability by means of Motor Evoked Potentials.
