Mouse Footpad Inoculation

Mouse footpad inoculation is an experimental technique in which a biological agent is introduced into the plantar surface of a mouse paw to study peripheral infection, immune responses, or nervous-system involvement. The localized injection creates a defined peripheral site, allowing researchers to monitor agent replication, tissue responses, and potential movement through peripheral nerves toward the spinal cord or brain. In neuroscience, this model supports investigations of neuroinvasion, axonal transport, pain, neuroinflammation, and host defense. Researchers can assess outcomes through behavioral observations, tissue analysis, and measurement of neural or immune changes over time.

The footpad inoculation model is a valuable tool for characterizing viral-induced neuroinflammatory responses in vivo. In particular, it provides a clear assessment of viral kinetics and associated immunopathological processes initiated in the peripheral nervous system.

Protocols for Vaginal Inoculation and Sample Collection in the Experimental Mouse Model of Candida vaginitis

Key techniques to be used in the evaluation of Candida vaginitis in an experimental animal model are described. The methods will allow rapid collection of vaginal specimens and lymphocytes from draining lumbar lymph nodes. These techniques could give rise to mouse models of other diseases in the female lower genital tract.

Generating Virus-Induced Neuroinflammation in a Mouse Model

2025

This video demonstrates the generation of neuroinflammation in a mouse model. An anesthetized mouse with micro-wounds is taken, and an inoculum of pseudorabies virus (PRV) is applied to the wounds. The virus infects the peripheral nerves, spreads to the dorsal root ganglia (DRG), and further infects the spinal cord and brain. Infection of neurons in the nervous system leads to an immune response that induces neuronal damage, leading to neuroinflammation.
