Navigated Brain Stimulation

Navigated brain stimulation is a noninvasive technique that delivers targeted stimulation to specific brain regions by combining neurostimulation with individualized anatomical guidance. In navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation, a coil produces brief magnetic pulses that induce electrical currents in cortical tissue, while imaging-based neuronavigation tracks coil position relative to the participant’s brain. This approach supports functional mapping of motor, language, and other cortical areas, helping researchers link brain regions to behavior and cognition. It also improves stimulation targeting in studies of brain connectivity, neurological disorders, and potential therapeutic interventions by reducing anatomical uncertainty and enabling more reproducible experimental protocols.

2026

Here, we describe a standardized protocol for motor mapping using nTMS combined with diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)-based reconstruction of the corticospinal tract (CST). The protocol is reproducible, clinically feasible, and readily integrable into routine clinical workflows, providing a robust and valuable framework for motor pathway assessment, neuroplasticity research, and rehabilitation planning.

Navigational Behavior of Drosophila Larvae in Response to Optogenetic Stimulation of Olfactory Sensory Neurons

2025

This video demonstrates a study of the navigational behavior of Drosophila larvae in response to optogenetic stimulation of olfactory sensory neurons (ORNs). Transgenic Drosophila larvae expressing light-sensitive ion channels in the ORNs are placed on agarose within a behavior arena. Optogenetic stimulation with light opens the channels, causing a cation influx that triggers the transmission of the signal to the brain, and the navigation behavior is recorded.

Resting-state functional-connectivity MRI has identified abnormalities in patients with a wide range of neuropsychiatric disorders, including epilepsy due to malformations of cortical development. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in combination with EEG can demonstrate that patients with epilepsy have cortical hyperexcitability in regions with abnormal connectivity.
