Sequential Scanning

Sequential scanning is an imaging or measurement strategy that acquires data from multiple locations, planes, or time points in a defined order rather than simultaneously. In neuroscience, the system moves through selected regions or acquisition steps using consistent settings, then combines and aligns the resulting measurements to reconstruct a larger dataset or compare changes over time. This approach can support structural brain mapping, functional measurements, and longitudinal studies of neural activity or anatomy. By organizing acquisition into repeatable sequences, sequential scanning helps researchers examine spatial patterns, temporal changes, and relationships between neural structures and function.

Sequential Games

2025

Sequential games involve players making decisions one after another, with each player considering the prior decisions of other players before deciding their own strategy. The order of these decisions is crucial, as each decision influences subsequent ones, affecting the overall outcome. Decision trees are valuable tools in illustrating these games, helping visualize each possible decision and its consequences, allowing players to anticipate and plan strategies effectively. Consider two coffee...

Leaky Scanning

During most eukaryotic translation processes, the small 40S ribosome subunit scans an mRNA from its 5' end until it encounters the first start AUG codon. The large 60S ribosomal subunit then joins the smaller one to initiate protein synthesis. The location of the translation initiation is largely determined by the nucleotides near the start codon as there may be multiple translation initiation sites present on the mRNA. Marilyn Kozak discovered that the sequence RCCAUGG (where R stands for...

Sequential Game: Backward Induction

2025

Backward induction is a technique for solving sequential games. It involves analyzing the game starting from the end and working backwards to the beginning. This method helps players determine their best strategies by anticipating how others will react at each stage of the game, ultimately leading to the Nash equilibrium. Imagine two beverage companies, FreshFizz and CoolBrew, deciding whether to enter a new market. FreshFizz moves first and must choose to enter or stay out. If FreshFizz...

Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM)

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Andrew J. Steckl — University of Cincinnati A scanning electron microscope, or SEM, is a powerful microscope that uses electrons to form an image. It allows for imaging of conductive samples at magnifications that cannot be achieved using traditional microscopes. Modern light microscopes can achieve a magnification of ~1,000X, while typical SEM can reach magnifications of more than 30,000X. Because the SEM doesn’t use light to create images, the resulting pictures it...

2014

A microfluidic vortex assisted electroporation platform was developed for sequential delivery of multiple molecules into identical cell populations with precise and independent dosage control. The system’s size based target cell purification step preceding electroporation aided to enhance molecular delivery efficiency and processed cell viability.
