Somatic Compartment

The somatic compartment is the cell-body region of a neuron, containing the nucleus and much of the machinery that maintains cellular function and processes incoming signals. In neuronal signaling, synaptic potentials from dendrites spread toward the soma, where their combined electrical effects influence membrane potential and contribute to the decision to initiate an action potential at the axon initial segment. Studying this compartment helps researchers relate cellular structure to electrical behavior, gene expression, metabolism, and synaptic integration. Somatic recordings and compartmental models are therefore widely used to investigate neural circuits, disease-related changes, and how neurons encode and transmit information.

Tissue Regeneration with Somatic Stem Cells

2023

Somatic or adult stem cells, like embryonic stem cells, are capable of self-renewal but demonstrate a restricted differentiation potential. Nonetheless, these cells are crucial to homeostatic processes and play an important role in tissue repair. By studying and manipulating this cell population, scientist may be able to develop new regenerative therapies for injuries and diseases. This video first defines somatic stem cells, and then explores the role these cells play in tissue regeneration.

Compartment Models: Two-Compartment Model

2025

The two-compartment model divides the body into central and peripheral compartments to account for varying blood perfusion rates among organs and tissues, affecting drug distribution. The central compartment includes blood and highly perfused tissues with rapid drug distribution, while the peripheral compartment contains tissues with slower drug distribution. After a single IV bolus dose, the drug concentration is high in plasma and low in tissues. The drug distribution between compartments...

Compartment Models: Single-Compartment Model

2023

The single-compartment model serves as a simplified representation of the human body. This model assumes that the body functions as a single, well-mixed open compartment. When a drug is administered intravenously, it enters the body and quickly distributes uniformly. The drug then undergoes biotransformation and elimination, ultimately leaving the body. The volume of this compartment is referred to as the apparent volume of distribution into which the drug can uniformly distribute. In this...

Three-Compartment Open Model

2025

The three-compartment open model is a pharmacokinetic model used to describe the distribution and elimination of drugs following extravascular administration. It comprises a central compartment representing the plasma and two peripheral compartments. The highly perfused peripheral compartment represents organs and tissues with a rich blood supply, such as the liver, kidneys, and lungs. The scarcely perfused peripheral compartment represents tissues with lower blood supply, such as adipose...

Cited by 5 •

2016

The protocol presented in this study describes methods for the real-time monitoring of reprogramming progression via the kinetic measurement of positive and negative pluripotent stem cell markers using flow cytometry analysis. The protocol also includes the imaging-based assessment of morphology, and marker or reporter expression during iPSC generation.
