Superior Sagittal Sinus

The superior sagittal sinus is a large dural venous channel that runs along the midline of the brain and drains blood from the cerebral hemispheres, making it essential for intracranial circulation. Formed between layers of the dura mater, it receives cerebral veins and cerebrospinal fluid through arachnoid granulations before directing this fluid and deoxygenated blood toward the confluence of sinuses. In neuroscience, its anatomy helps explain venous drainage, cerebrospinal fluid reabsorption, and pressure regulation within the cranial cavity. Understanding the superior sagittal sinus is also important for interpreting neuroimaging and recognizing conditions such as cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, which can impair drainage and increase intracranial pressure.

Source: Richard Glickman-Simon, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine, MA This video provides an overview of sinus, nose, and throat examinations. The demonstration begins with a brief overview of the anatomy of the region. The upper third of the nose is bony, and the bottom two-thirds are cartilaginous. Air entering the nares passes through the nasal vestibules and into the narrow passageway between the nasal septum...
