Transverse Sigmoid Sinus

The transverse sigmoid sinus is a continuous pathway within the brain’s dural venous sinuses that helps return deoxygenated blood from the cranial cavity to the internal jugular vein. Blood flows laterally through the transverse sinus and then curves inferiorly through the sigmoid sinus before exiting the skull via the jugular foramen. Its position alongside the posterior cranial fossa, cerebellum, and temporal bone makes it an important landmark in neuroanatomy and skull-base surgery. Magnetic resonance venography and computed tomography can assess this pathway, while recognizing sinus thrombosis, narrowing, or injury is essential for diagnosing cerebrovascular disease and planning safe neurosurgical procedures.

Source: Richard Glickman-Simon, MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Health and Community Medicine, Tufts University School of Medicine, MA This video provides an overview of sinus, nose, and throat examinations. The demonstration begins with a brief overview of the anatomy of the region. The upper third of the nose is bony, and the bottom two-thirds are cartilaginous. Air entering the nares passes through the nasal vestibules and into the narrow passageway between the nasal septum...

Minimally invasive transverse aortic constriction (MTAC) conserves the essentials of regular transverse aortic constriction (TAC) while eliminating the use of a ventilator with tracheal intubation. It proves to be a highly desirable method for high-throughput studies on left ventricular overload, particularly in translational studies.
