Center Seeking

Center seeking describes the tendency of an object’s net force or acceleration to point toward a fixed center, a principle that governs circular and curved motion in physics. This inward-directed acceleration changes the object’s velocity by continuously altering its direction, while the required centripetal force has magnitude F = mv²/r and may arise from gravity, tension, friction, or a normal force. Understanding center-seeking motion helps explain planetary orbits, rotating systems, centrifuges, and vehicles moving through curves. It also provides a foundation for analyzing stability, orbital dynamics, and the relationship between force, speed, and radius.

Operant Sensation Seeking in the Mouse

In this protocol we describe a method of operant learning using sensory stimuli as a reinforcer in the mouse. It requires no prior training or food restriction, and it allows the study of motivated behavior without the use of a pharmacological or natural reinforcer such as food.

A Procedure to Study the Effect of Prolonged Food Restriction on Heroin Seeking in Abstinent Rats

A procedure that allows a demonstration of robust augmentation of drug seeking in food-restricted rats is described. Following heroin self-administration training, rats go through an abstinence period, in a drug-free environment, during which they are mildly food restricted. Drug seeking is then tested in the drug-associated environment.

A Procedure for Studying the Footshock-Induced Reinstatement of Cocaine Seeking in Laboratory Rats

Animal models of relapse, known as reinstatement procedures, have been used extensively to study the role of stress in relapse to drug seeking. Here, we report on a method for inducing the reinstatement of cocaine seeking in laboratory rats via acute exposures to mild, intermittent electric footshock.

We describe a protocol for inducing rewarding and nonrewarding experiences in fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) using voluntary ethanol consumption as a measure for changes in reward states.

Optogenetic Induction of Long-Term Depression for Suppressing Narcotic-Seeking Behavior in Rats

Source: Rich, M. T., et al. Using Optogenetics to Reverse Neuroplasticity and Inhibit Cocaine Seeking in Rats. J. Vis. Exp. (2021)This video demonstrates the use of optogenetics to induce long-term depression (LTD) at medial geniculate nucleus to lateral amygdala (MGN-LA) synapses, weakening cue-induced narcotic-seeking behavior in a rat model. The rat, surgically implanted with optical fibers and virally transduced to express light-sensitive ion channels, undergoes optogenetic stimulation with...
