Neural Mechanisms

Neural mechanisms are the biological processes through which the nervous system generates perception, thought, emotion, and behavior, making them central to psychological science. Neurons transmit electrical signals called action potentials and communicate across synapses by releasing neurotransmitters, while interconnected brain networks integrate these signals and modify their activity through learning and experience. Studying these mechanisms links brain function with observable behavior and mental processes, helping researchers explain attention, memory, motivation, and decision-making. This knowledge also supports research into neurological and psychological disorders and informs interventions that target altered neural communication or circuit function.

2013

Infrared nerve stimulation has been proposed as an alternative to electrical stimulation in a range of nerve types, including those associated with the auditory system. This protocol describes a patch clamp method for studying the mechanism of infrared nerve stimulation in a culture of primary auditory neurons.

Investigating the Neural Mechanisms of Aware and Unaware Fear Memory with fMRI

2011

A methodology to investigate the neural mechanisms that support aware and unaware memory processes during fear conditioning is described. This method monitors blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) functional magnetic resonance imaging, skin conductance response, and unconditioned stimulus expectancy during Pavlovian fear conditioning to assess the neural correlates of distinct memory processes.

Neural stem cells (NSCs) refer to cells which can self-renew and differentiate into the three neural lineages. Here, we describe a protocol to determine NSC frequency in a given cell population using neurosphere formation and differentiation under clonal conditions.

Neural Activity Propagation in an Unfolded Hippocampal Preparation with a Penetrating Micro-electrode Array

We have developed an in vitro unfolded hippocampus which preserves CA1-CA3 array of neurons. Combined with the penetrating micro-electrode array, neural activity can be monitored in both the longitudinal and transverse orientations. This method provides advantages over hippocampal slice preparations as the propagation in the entire hippocampus can be recorded simultaneously.

Humor or Rationality? The Neural Mechanisms of How Agent Type and Language Style Influence Satisfaction with Ride-Hailing Service Failure Recovery
