Aging Studies

Aging studies is an interdisciplinary field that examines how people change across the lifespan and why those changes vary among individuals, making it central to understanding development, health, and well-being in later life. In psychology, researchers assess cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and social changes using longitudinal and cross-sectional designs while considering factors such as health, environment, relationships, and socioeconomic conditions. These approaches help distinguish age-related patterns from cohort effects and individual differences. Findings inform theories of lifespan development and support strategies for promoting mental health, independence, social connection, and quality of life among older adults.

Pulse wave velocity (PWV) measurement assesses arterial stiffness by a tonometry-based system that measures the speed with which arterial pressure wave travels along the arterial tree, typically approximating the time that it takes this wave to travel from the descending aorta (using the carotid artery as a surrogate) to the femoral artery. Carotid-femoral PWV increases two- to threefold across the adult lifespan.

The goal of the method presented here is to explore protein aggregation during normal aging in the model organism C. elegans. The protocol represents a powerful tool to study the highly insoluble large aggregates that form with age and to determine how changes in proteostasis impact protein aggregation.

An Introduction to Aging and Regeneration

2023

Tissues are maintained through a balance of cellular aging and regeneration. Aging refers to the gradual loss of cellular function, and regeneration is the repair of damaged tissue generally mediated by preexisting adult or somatic stem cells. Scientists are interested in understanding the biological mechanisms behind these two complex processes. By doing so, researchers may be able to use somatic stem cells to treat degenerative diseases and develop therapies that could delay the effects of...
