Video-electroencephalographic Monitoring

Video-electroencephalographic monitoring is a diagnostic method that synchronizes continuous video recordings of behavior with electroencephalography (EEG), which measures electrical activity produced by the brain. Scalp electrodes detect changes in neural activity while video captures movements, responsiveness, and other observable behaviors, allowing clinicians and researchers to match behavioral events with EEG patterns over time. In behavioral and neurological research, this approach helps distinguish epileptic seizures from nonepileptic events and links specific actions or altered states of awareness to brain activity. The combined record supports diagnosis, treatment planning, seizure classification, and investigation of brain-behavior relationships.

Concurrent Electroencephalographic and Local Field Potential Recordings in an Anesthetized Rat

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure for concurrent recordings of co-localized electroencephalography (EEG) and local field potentials (LFPs) in an anesthetized rat. The process involves preparing the rat and attaching stimulating electrodes to its whisker pads. An EEG spider electrode is placed on the rat's skull for surface EEG measurements. At the same time, a multi-channel microelectrode is inserted into a specific brain region through a burr hole in the skull to record neural activity...

Video-oculography is a very quantitative method to investigate ocular motor performance as well as motor learning. Here, we describe how to measure video-oculography in mice. Applying this technique on normal, pharmacologically-treated or genetically modified mice is a powerful research tool to explore the underlying physiology of motor behaviors.
