Animal Implantation

Animal implantation is the surgical placement of a biomaterial, medical device, engineered tissue, or therapeutic system within a living animal to study biological responses and evaluate performance. The procedure creates a tissue-device interface in which placement, fixation, sterilization, and postoperative care influence healing, inflammation, foreign-body responses, and long-term function. In bioengineering, animal implantation supports preclinical testing of implants, biosensors, drug-delivery systems, prostheses, and regenerative scaffolds. Measurements of biocompatibility, mechanical stability, degradation, and therapeutic outcomes help researchers refine designs, identify safety concerns, and determine whether technologies are ready for further development or clinical translation.
