Ethanol Solubilization

Ethanol solubilization is a laboratory method for dissolving compounds that have limited water solubility, enabling their preparation for biological experiments and analytical procedures. Ethanol acts as an organic solvent whose hydroxyl group supports hydrogen bonding while its nonpolar region interacts with less polar molecules; gradual mixing can therefore produce a uniform solution or concentrated stock. Researchers use ethanol solubilization to prepare reagents, extracts, drugs, and other test compounds before adding them to aqueous buffers or cell-based systems. Careful control of ethanol concentration, mixing, and appropriate solvent controls helps maintain compound stability and distinguish biological effects from solvent-related responses.

A method to determine the time course of ethanol concentration in the brains of rats during operant ethanol self-administration is described. Gas chromatography with flame ionization detection is used to quantify ethanol in the dialysate samples, because it has the sensitivity required for the small volumes that are generated.

Biofuels: Producing Ethanol from Cellulosic Material

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University In this experiment, cellulosic material (such as corn stalks, leaves, grasses, etc.) will be used as a feedstock for the production of ethanol. The cellulosic material is first pretreated (ground and heated), digested with enzymes, and then fermented with yeast. Ethanol production is monitored using an ethanol probe. The experiment can be extended to optimize ethanol production by varying the feedstock used,...
