Emphysema Fibrosis Detection

Emphysema fibrosis detection is the identification and characterization of two major patterns of lung injury: destruction of alveolar walls with enlarged air spaces in emphysema, and excessive deposition of connective tissue that produces scarring and stiffness in fibrosis. Detection methods analyze lung structure through imaging or tissue examination, distinguishing changes in air-space size, density, texture, and architectural organization from healthy tissue. In biology and pulmonary research, these measurements help classify disease, assess severity and progression, evaluate responses to treatment, and clarify how chronic injury remodels the lung. Reliable detection also supports studies of mechanisms linking inflammation, tissue damage, and impaired gas exchange.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease II: Emphysema

2026

Emphysema, a major phenotype of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is characterized by irreversible destruction of alveolar walls and permanent enlargement of distal airspaces. Unlike chronic bronchitis, which primarily affects the airways, emphysema predominantly involves the lung parenchyma, where structural damage leads to airflow limitation.PathophysiologyIt most commonly results from prolonged exposure to cigarette smoke and other toxic gases, particularly cigarette smoke.

We describe a method to produce an animal model of liver fibrosis in the rat, and assess the degree of fibrosis by histological examination of the liver. The model can be used to study the development of liver disease as well as to test the efficacy of potential anti-fibrotic agents.

Presented here is a useful protocol for lung fixation that creates a stable condition for histological evaluate of lung specimens from a mouse model of emphysema. The main advantage of this model is that it can fix many lungs with the same constant pressure without lung collapse or deflation.
