Biopsy Sample Preparation

Biopsy sample preparation is the set of laboratory procedures used to preserve, process, and prepare tissue or cell specimens for microscopic and molecular analysis, making it a critical step in cancer research. After collection, samples may be fixed to stabilize cellular structures, embedded in paraffin or frozen, sectioned into thin slices, and stained to reveal morphology, biomarkers, or genetic material. Careful handling helps maintain tissue architecture and analyte quality, supporting histopathology, immunohistochemistry, genomic testing, and tumor profiling. Consistent preparation improves diagnostic interpretation, enables comparisons across experiments, and provides reliable material for studying tumor biology and evaluating potential treatments.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. B. Jill Venton - University of Virginia Sample preparation is the way in which a sample is treated to prepare for analysis. Careful sample preparation is critical in analytical chemistry to accurately generate either a standard or unknown sample for a chemical measurement. Errors in analytical chemistry methods are categorized as random or systematic. Random errors are errors due to change and are often due to noise in instrument. Systematic errors are due to...
