In Vitro Invasion Assay

An in vitro invasion assay is a laboratory method that measures how cells move through a barrier resembling extracellular matrix, providing a controlled model of invasive behavior. In a typical transwell assay, cancer cells are placed in an upper chamber separated from a lower chamber by a porous membrane coated with matrix material; a chemoattractant gradient stimulates cells to migrate, degrade the barrier, and pass through the pores. Researchers then stain and count invaded cells to compare the effects of genes, signaling pathways, drugs, or microenvironmental conditions. These assays help characterize metastatic potential and evaluate candidate anti-invasive therapies, while offering a practical complement to animal and clinical studies.
