External Reference

An external reference is a known chemical standard measured separately from a sample to provide a reliable basis for identifying or quantifying analytes in chemistry. In analytical methods such as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, the reference is held in a separate tube or coaxial insert, and the sample’s signals are compared with its known resonance or concentration without introducing the standard into the sample. This approach helps prevent contamination, chemical reaction, or signal overlap from an internal standard. External references support chemical-shift calibration, quantitative measurements, and analysis of sensitive, limited, or reactive samples.

Displaced reference is an important milestone in symbolic understanding that begins to emerge around 12 months of age. It is the ability to use words to refer to objects, people, or events that are not currently visible. This ability allows infants and toddlers to learn through communication even when objects or events are not directly present.Early DevelopmentBy approximately 12 to 13 months, infants may respond to the name of an absent familiar object by looking or pointing toward the place...

Talwalkar, MD, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, CT The pelvic exam can feel invasive to patients, so it is important to do everything possible to make patients feel comfortable and empowered, rather than vulnerable. Clinicians should be aware of how they are communicating, both verbally and nonverbally, and should give their patients...
