Handheld Spectrophotometer

A handheld spectrophotometer is a portable analytical instrument that measures how strongly a sample absorbs or reflects selected wavelengths of light, enabling rapid chemical analysis outside a conventional laboratory. It directs light through or onto a sample, separates wavelengths with optical components, and uses a detector to convert the resulting intensity into spectral or concentration information, often through comparison with a reference or calibration curve. In chemistry, these instruments support identification, quality control, reaction monitoring, and field testing of solutions and materials, while their compact design improves access to timely measurements in environmental, industrial, and educational settings.

Introduction to the Spectrophotometer

2023

The spectrophotometer is a routinely used instrument in scientific research. Spectrophotometry is the quantitative measurement of how much a chemical substance absorbs light by passing a beam of light through the sample using a spectrophotometer. In this video, basic concepts in spectrophotometry, including transmittance, absorbance and the Beer-Lambert Law are reviewed in addition to the components of the spectrophotometer. These concepts provide a foundation for how to determine the...
