Metal Ligands

Metal ligands are atoms, ions, or molecules that bind to a metal center by donating one or more electron pairs, forming coordination complexes. Their donor atoms create coordinate covalent bonds whose strength, geometry, denticity, and electronic effects depend on ligand structure and the metal’s oxidation state; multidentate ligands can form chelate rings that increase complex stability. In chemistry, ligand-controlled metal complexes support homogeneous catalysis, molecular sensing, separation processes, and the design of magnetic or luminescent materials. Ligand coordination also helps explain metalloprotein function, reaction selectivity, and how metal ions behave in biological and environmental systems.

Metal-Ligand Bonds

The hemoglobin in the blood, the chlorophyll in green plants, vitamin B-12, and the catalyst used in the manufacture of polyethylene all contain coordination compounds. Ions of the metals, especially the transition metals, are likely to form complexes. In these complexes, transition metals form coordinate covalent bonds, a kind of Lewis acid-base interaction in which both of the electrons in the bond are contributed by a donor (Lewis base) to an electron acceptor (Lewis acid). The Lewis acid in...

We describe here a method for growth of Neisseria gonorrhoeae in metal-restricted liquid medium to facilitate the expression of genes for metal uptake. We also outline downstream experiments to characterize the phenotype of gonococci grown in these conditions. These methods may be adapted to be suitable for characterization of metal-responsive genes in other bacteria.

Accessing Valuable Ligand Supports for Transition Metals: A Modified, Intermediate Scale Preparation of 1,2,3,4,5-Pentamethylcyclopentadiene

2017

Reliable, intermediate scale preparation of 1,2,3,4,5-pentamethylcyclopentadiene (Cp*H) is presented. The revised protocol for the synthesis and purification of the ligand minimizes the need for specialized laboratory equipment while simplifying reaction workups and product purification. Use of Cp*H in the synthesis of [Cp*MCl2]2 complexes (M = Ru, Ir) is also described.

The main goal of this work is to elucidate the role of capping agents in regulating the size of palladium nanoparticles by combining in situ small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) and ligand-based kinetic modeling.

Quadruply Metal-Metal Bonded Paddlewheels

Source: Corey Burns, Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University Paddlewheel complexes are a class of compounds comprised of two metal ions (1st, 2nd, or 3rd row transition metals) held in proximity by four bridging ligands (most commonly formamidinates or carboxylates) (Figure 1). Varying the identity of the metal ion and the bridging ligand provides access to large families of paddlewheel complexes. The structure of paddlewheel complexes allows for metal-metal bonding,...
