Pyrolysis Oils

Pyrolysis oils are complex liquid products formed when organic materials undergo thermal decomposition, offering a potential route for converting biomass and waste into fuels and chemical feedstocks. During pyrolysis, heating in the absence or near-absence of oxygen breaks polymers and larger molecules into vapors; rapid cooling then condenses these vapors into an oil containing oxygenated compounds, hydrocarbons, water, and other products. In chemistry and energy research, scientists analyze pyrolysis-oil composition, stability, acidity, and reactivity to guide upgrading processes such as catalytic treatment and refining. These approaches can improve fuel quality, recover valuable chemicals, and support more efficient carbon utilization.
