Cytotoxic Substances

Cytotoxic substances are chemicals or biological molecules that damage or kill cells, making them important in immune defense, infection, toxicology, and cancer research. In immunology, cytotoxic lymphocytes release perforin, which forms pores in target-cell membranes, and granzymes, which enter through these pores and activate programmed cell death. Other cytotoxic agents, including microbial toxins and certain drugs, can disrupt membranes, inhibit protein synthesis, or damage DNA. Studying these mechanisms helps explain how the immune system eliminates infected or abnormal cells while limiting injury to healthy tissue, and supports the development of vaccines, antimicrobial strategies, and cancer therapies.

An Assay to Evaluate Immunodominance in Cytotoxic T Lymphocyte Responses

2025

The video showcases a flow cytometry-based assay for assaying immunodominance in cytotoxic T lymphocytes or CTL responses. Injected fluorescent target cells exhibit varying fluorescence corresponding to immunogenic epitopes. Post-spleen collection and sorting reveal a reduction in high-intensity fluorescent cells, confirming immunodominance in CTL responses.

Substance Use Disorders Affecting Sleep

2024

Substance use disorders involve a pattern of using drugs more extensively than intended and continuing use despite harmful consequences. This includes legal substances like alcohol and nicotine, as well as illegal drugs. These disorders often involve both physical and psychological dependence, reflecting compulsive use of substances that significantly alter thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, contributing to a major public health issue. Understanding the concepts of physical dependence,...

Deleterious Substances in Aggregate

Deleterious substances in aggregates can be detrimental to the quality and durability of concrete. These substances include organic impurities like loam, which interfere with cement hydration and are usually present in the sand. These prevent a good bond between aggregate and cement paste. Organic impurities can be detected using the colorimetric test, where the darkness of a solution after agitation indicates the level of organic content. Another type of impurity is clay and fine material that...

Targeted Substance Delivery to the Mouse Brain via Infusion into the Internal Carotid Artery
