Fetal Uptake

Fetal uptake is the movement and accumulation of substances from the maternal environment into fetal tissues, a process that matters in pregnancy, fetal medicine, pharmacology, and toxicology. It occurs primarily across the placenta, where compounds can pass through the maternal-fetal interface by passive diffusion, facilitated transport, or active transporter systems, depending on their molecular properties, concentration, and placental conditions. Measuring or predicting fetal uptake helps researchers assess how medicines, nutrients, and environmental chemicals reach the fetus, evaluate potential developmental risks, and design treatments that provide fetal benefit while limiting unwanted exposure.

2025

This video demonstrates an in vitro technique for estimating amino acid uptake by bone marrow-derived stromal cells. Na+-dependent amino acid transporters mediate the uptake of radiolabeled amino acids inside the cells, and the cellular uptake is estimated by measuring the radioactivity.

Fetal and perinatal death is a common feature when studying genetic alterations affecting cardiac development. High-frequency ultrasound imaging has improved 2-D resolution and can provide excellent information on early cardiac development and is an ideal method to detect the impact on cardiac structure and function prior to death.

Various animal models of congenital diaphragmatic hernia and fetal tracheal occlusion present advantages and disadvantages regarding ethical issues, cost, surgical difficulty, size, survival rates, and availability of genetic tools. This model provides a new tool to study the impact of both tracheal occlusion and increased luminal pressure on lung development.
