Orthodontic Appliances

Orthodontic appliances are devices used to guide tooth movement, modify jaw relationships, and improve the alignment and function of the teeth and bite. Fixed appliances, such as braces, use brackets, wires, and elastic components to apply controlled, sustained forces, while removable appliances rely on patient use and may support alignment, jaw development, or retention after treatment. In medicine and dentistry, these devices help manage malocclusion, crowding, spacing, and selected skeletal discrepancies. Proper appliance selection, adjustment, and monitoring can improve oral function, facial development, and long-term stability while reducing the risk of treatment-related complications.

2024

Here, we present a protocol for studying orthodontic tooth movement (OTM), serving as a suitable model for investigating the mechanisms of bone adaptation, root resorption, and the response of bone cells to mechanical stimuli. This comprehensive guide provides detailed information on the OTM model, micro-computed tomography acquisition, and subsequent analysis.

2011

We present a protocol for structural and compositional analysis of natural oral biofilm from orthodontic appliances with in situ hybridization (FISH) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Oral biofilm samples were collected from palatal expanders, scraping acrylic-resin flakes off their surface and referring them for molecular processing.
