Rodent Kidney Assessment

Rodent kidney assessment is the systematic evaluation of renal structure and function in rats or mice, providing a practical model for studying kidney health, injury, and disease. Investigators combine physiological measurements, such as serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen, with urinalysis, organ examination, and histopathology to detect impaired filtration, altered concentrating ability, inflammation, or tissue damage. These complementary approaches help characterize drug toxicity, nephroprotective effects, and mechanisms of renal disorders. Standardized assessment also supports reproducible preclinical studies, linking molecular and cellular findings to clinically relevant outcomes before therapies advance to human research.

The use of ultra-high field MRI as a non-invasive way to obtain phenotypic information of rodent models for polycystic kidney disease and to monitor interventions is described. Compared with the traditional histological approach, MRI images can be acquired in vivo, allowing for longitudinal follow-up.

Determination of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the gold standard to assess overall kidney function. However, traditional procedures to measure this parameter are cumbersome and require a large investment of time. Here we describe a faster and minimally invasive method to determinate GFR transcutaneously.

The degree of vascular dysfunction and contributing physiological mechanisms can be assessed in patients with chronic kidney disease by measuring brachial artery flow-mediated dilation, aortic pulse-wave velocity, and vascular endothelial cell protein expression.

Extracting Intact Kidney from Mouse: A Technique to Obtain Kidney Without Renal Capsule from Murine Models
