Skin Abscess

Skin abscesses are localized, painful collections of pus within the skin or underlying soft tissue, usually caused by bacterial infection, and they matter because untreated infection can spread. They develop when microbes enter through a break in the skin, triggering inflammation that recruits immune cells; tissue debris, bacteria, and fluid then accumulate within a walled-off cavity. In medicine, recognizing features such as tenderness, redness, swelling, and fluctuance helps distinguish an abscess from cellulitis and guides care, which may include incision and drainage, culture, and antibiotics for selected patients. Understanding abscess formation supports timely treatment and prevention of complications.

Brain Abscess l: Introduction

2026

A brain abscess is a focal, intracerebral infection characterized by a localized collection of pus within the brain parenchyma, resulting from microbial invasion and the body’s inflammatory response. It progresses through stages: early and late cerebritis, followed by early and late capsule formation, reflecting tissue destruction, immune response, and eventual encapsulation.Etiology and PathogenesisCausative organisms vary with source and host factors, often involving polymicrobial infections,...

Skin lesions are common and important features in many rheumatic diseases, and biopsy with pathological analysis plays a critical role in diagnosis. This article provides a detailed overview of the standardized skin biopsy procedure and, using discoid lupus erythematosus as an example, highlights the essential role of dermatopathology in diagnosing rheumatic diseases.

A Murine Skin Wound Infection Model to Study the Immune Response against a Bacterial Pathogen

2025

This video demonstrates a technique to generate a murine model of skin wound infection. Upon infecting mice — engineered to express a fluorescent protein in neutrophils — with a genetically modified bioluminescent Staphylococcus aureus — a pathogenic bacteria. The bacterial burden at the infection site and the neutrophil recruitment dynamics can be studied using whole animal imaging.
