Somal Area Quantification

Somal area quantification is a morphometric method that measures the two-dimensional size of a neuronal soma, or cell body, in microscopy images. The process typically involves identifying soma boundaries through manual tracing or image-segmentation methods, calibrating measurements to image scale, and calculating enclosed area in square micrometers. In medicine and neuroscience research, these measurements help characterize neuronal morphology, compare cell populations, and detect structural changes associated with development, injury, neurodegeneration, or treatment. When combined with other cellular features, such as neurite structure and cell density, somal area quantification supports objective analysis of tissue organization and disease-related changes.

Invertebrate Lifespan Quantification

2023

Many animals naturally stop growing upon reaching adulthood, after which they undergo aging or "senescence" until dying. The amount of time between an organism\'s birth and death is called its lifespan, which can be influenced by various biological and environmental factors. By exposing organisms to different growth conditions, scientists can better understand the factors affecting lifespan. Flies and worms are ideal organisms to perform such experiments, given their short generation time and...

Here we describe a high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) assay to quantify the immunosuppressant tacrolimus in dried blood spots using a simple manual protein precipitation step and online column extraction.

Colorimetric Assay for Quantification of Lactate in Test Samples

2025

This video describes a colorimetric assay for lactate measurement in cell lysates by using the lactate dehydrogenase enzyme. This enzyme converts lactate into pyruvate, along with the conversion of NAD to NADH that reacts with tetrazolium dyes and gives a colored product that can be measured spectrophotometrically to quantitate the lactate.
