Angled Coronal Approach

The angled coronal approach is a neurosurgical access strategy that uses a coronal orientation with an oblique trajectory to reach intracranial targets. By adjusting the angle of the operative corridor relative to the brain’s coronal plane, clinicians can align visualization and instrument movement with the target while limiting passage through surrounding neural tissue. This approach is relevant to procedures involving deep or anatomically constrained regions, where the choice of trajectory influences exposure, tissue disruption, and surgical control. Understanding its spatial geometry helps neuroscience students and researchers interpret operative anatomy, compare access routes, and evaluate how surgical planning supports safer, more precise intervention.

Cited by 6 •

2020

Described here is a stereotactic procedure that can target challenging and difficult-to-reach brain regions (due to spatial limitations) using an angled coronal approach. This protocol is adaptable to both mouse and rat models and can be applied to diverse neuroscientific applications, including cannula implantation and microinjections of viral constructs.

Treatment of Rat Coronal Slices with a Neurotoxic Peptide

Measurement of Evoked Potassium Ion Concentration Dynamics in Coronal Hippocampal Slices

2025

The video demonstrates evoked potassium ion concentration dynamics on electrical stimulation of mouse coronal hippocampal brain slices. A bipolar stimulating electrode is inserted into the stratum radiatum of the CA3 region in the hippocampus, and a potassium-ion selective electrode is placed in the CA1 stratum radiatum. The electrical stimulation causes an action potential, resulting in potassium ion release. Finally, the lack of evoked potassium ion response in the presence of an inhibitory...
