Beta Amyloid Toxicity

Beta amyloid toxicity is the harmful effect of beta amyloid peptides on neurons and synapses, a process central to research on Alzheimer’s disease and neurodegeneration. Soluble beta amyloid oligomers can bind neuronal membranes and synaptic proteins, disrupting calcium homeostasis, impairing neurotransmission, and promoting oxidative stress and inflammatory signaling. These changes weaken synaptic plasticity and may contribute to neuronal dysfunction and cell death before extensive plaque formation occurs. Studying beta amyloid toxicity helps researchers evaluate disease mechanisms, develop cellular and animal models, and identify therapeutic strategies that target peptide production, aggregation, clearance, or downstream neuronal injury.

Beta

Beta is a crucial metric in finance used to assess an investment's risk and expected return relative to the overall market. It is calculated as the slope of the line in a scatterplot that compares the returns of an individual stock to the returns of the market benchmark, typically represented by a broad market index. Beta quantifies how much a stock's price moves in response to market movements, providing insight into its volatility and systematic risk. A beta of one indicates that the stock's...

Assaying β-amyloid Toxicity using a Transgenic C. elegans Model

The intensely studied nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans can be transgenically engineered to express the human β-amyloid peptide (Aβ). Induced expression of Aβ in C. elegans muscle leads to a rapid, reproducible paralysis phenotype that can be used to monitor treatments that modulate Aβ toxicity.
