Canine Stroke Model

A canine stroke model is an experimental or naturally occurring animal system used to investigate cerebrovascular injury, neurological dysfunction, and recovery, providing a bridge between basic neuroscience and translational research. In ischemic stroke, blockage of a cerebral blood vessel reduces oxygen and glucose delivery, causing energy failure, neuronal damage, inflammation, and behavioral deficits that can be monitored over time. These models support research on brain imaging, disease mechanisms, biomarkers, rehabilitation, and potential therapies. Because dogs can develop naturally occurring stroke and permit longitudinal clinical assessment, they may help evaluate how experimental findings translate to veterinary and human neurological care.

Various murine models of middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) are widely used in experimental brain research. Here, we demonstrate the model of transcranial permanent distal MCAO which produces consistent cortical infarction of a size corresponding to damage imposed by the majority of human ischemic strokes.

Source: Shionoya, Y., et al. Ethanol-Induced Cervical Sympathetic Ganglion Block Applications for Promoting Canine Inferior Alveolar Nerve Regeneration Using an Artificial Nerve. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates a canine model for inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) regeneration using a biodegradable scaffold and ethanol-induced sympathetic blockade. The procedure involves surgically accessing the cervical sympathetic ganglion and injecting ethanol to induce vasodilation. The resulting...

The Stroke Preclinical Assessment Network Multi-Laboratory Model of Thromboembolic Stroke with Thrombolysis: TE-MCAo

2025

To simulate thromboembolic stroke, emboli prepared from heterologous rat blood were injected into the middle cerebral artery, followed by administration of systemic thrombolysis for recanalization. This version of the model is optimized for use in a multi-laboratory network and supports testing multiple candidate therapeutics.
