Circadian Plasticity

Circadian plasticity is the capacity of biological timing systems to adjust their rhythms, phase, and outputs in response to environmental or physiological changes. In neuroscience, light is the principal synchronizing cue: retinal signals reach the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the brain’s central clock, and alter clock-gene expression and neural activity to reset daily timing, while sleep, feeding, and stress can further shape circadian responses. This flexibility helps organisms align behavior and physiology with changing day-night cycles and seasons. Studying circadian plasticity clarifies jet lag, shift-work disruption, sleep disorders, mood regulation, and how targeted light or behavioral schedules may improve circadian alignment.

Cited by 3 •

2017

A method to quantify the main temporal features seen in fly circadian locomotor rhythms is presented. The quantification is achieved by fitting fly activity with a multi-parametric model waveform. The model parameters describe the shape and size of the morning and evening peaks of daily activity.

Assaying Locomotor Activity to Study Circadian Rhythms and Sleep Parameters in Drosophila

We describe procedures for recording daily locomotor activity rhythms of Drosophila and subsequent data analysis. Locomotor activity rhythms are a reliable behavioral output of animal circadian clocks and are used as the standard readout of clock function when studying circadian mutants or examining how the environment regulates the circadian system.

Recording and Analysis of Circadian Rhythms in Running-wheel Activity in Rodents

Circadian rhythms in voluntary wheel-running activity in mammals are tightly coupled to the molecular oscillations of a master clock in the brain. As such, these daily rhythms in behavior can be used to study the influence of genetic, pharmacological, and environmental factors on the functioning of this circadian clock.

Plasticity

2023

Plasticity is the property where an object loses its elasticity and undergoes irreversible deformation, even after the deformation forces are eliminated. If a material deforms irreversibly without increasing stress or load, then this is called ideal plasticity. For example, when a force is applied to an aluminum rod, it changes its shape, but it does not return to its original shape once the force is removed. Plastic deformation or ductility is thus a permanent deformation or change in the...
