Corneal Neovascularization

Corneal neovascularization is the pathological growth of new blood vessels into the normally avascular cornea, where it can disrupt transparency and impair vision. It typically develops when injury, infection, inflammation, contact lens-related hypoxia, or other stress reduces oxygen availability and activates inflammatory signaling, including vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), which promotes endothelial cell migration and vessel formation. In neuroscience, this condition provides a model for studying interactions among corneal sensory nerves, immune responses, tissue repair, and visual function. Understanding these mechanisms supports research into anti-angiogenic treatments and strategies that preserve corneal clarity and neural sensation.

Here, we present the mouse laser-induced choroidal neovascularization (CNV) protocol, an experimental model that re-creates the vascular hallmarks of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Once mastered, it can reliably and effectively induce CNV as a model system to test various experimental measures.
