Morphological Pattern Categorization

Morphological Pattern Categorization is the systematic classification of biological structures according to their shape, size, branching, and spatial arrangement. In neuroscience, researchers examine features such as neuronal soma geometry, dendritic arborization, axonal organization, and cellular layering, then group cells with similar structural profiles using visual assessment, quantitative measurements, or computational classification. These patterns can distinguish neuronal subtypes, reveal relationships between structure and function, and support analysis of development, connectivity, and disease-related remodeling. Standardized categorization also helps compare cells across brain regions, species, and experimental conditions, improving the interpretation of microscopy data and the construction of models of neural circuits.

Preoperational Thought III: Identities and Categorization

2026

Piaget’s preoperational stage, spanning ages 2 to 7, involves major advances in symbolic thought, language, and mental representation. Although logical reasoning remains limited, children increasingly recognize identity and classify objects and people into meaningful categories.Identity RecognitionChildren develop the concept of identity, understanding that people and objects can retain essential characteristics despite changes in appearance. For example, a person wearing a wig remains the same...

In this paper, we present a protocol to investigate differential cortical visual evoked potential morphological patterns through stimulation of ventral and dorsal networks using high-density EEG. Visual object and motion stimulus paradigms, with and without temporal jitter, are described. Visual evoked potential morphological analyses are also...

We describe a protocol for in vivo labeling of olfactory sensory neurons by electroporation and subsequent confocal laser-scanning or multiphoton microscopy to visualize neuronal morphology and its development over time.

How Data are Classified: Categorical Data

2023

A variable, usually notated by capital letters such as X and Y, is a characteristic or measurement that can be determined for each member of a population. Data are the actual values of variables. They may be numbers, or they may be words. Datum is a single value. Data are classified based on whether they are measurable or not. Categorical data cannot be measured; instead, it can be divided into categories. For example, if Y denotes a person's party affiliation, some examples of Y include...

Flat Mount Imaging of Mouse Skin and Its Application to the Analysis of Hair Follicle Patterning and Sensory Axon Morphology

Mammalian skin contains a diverse array of structures - such as hair follicles and nerve endings - that exhibit distinctive patterns of spatial organization. Analyzing skin as a flat mount takes advantage of the 2-dimensional geometry of this tissue to produce full-thickness high-resolution images of skin structures.
