Spinal Acupoint Stimulation

Spinal acupoint stimulation is a therapeutic and experimental technique that applies manual pressure, needles, or electrical signals to defined points near the spine to influence nervous system activity. Stimulation activates local sensory receptors and afferent nerve fibers, which can alter spinal cord processing and engage brain-mediated pathways involved in pain perception, autonomic regulation, and motor control. In neuroscience, the method supports studies of neuromodulation and brain–spinal cord communication, while clinical research examines its potential for managing pain and other functional disorders. Recording neural, physiological, and behavioral responses helps clarify its mechanisms, treatment effects, and possible integration with conventional neurorehabilitation.

2025

This video describes the in vivo intracellular recording of rat motoneurons under trans-spinal direct current stimulation. The protocol describes how to measure membrane properties and record the rhythmic firing of motoneurons before, during, and after anodal or cathodal polarization of the spinal cord.

Source: Remacle, T., et al. Treating Low Back Pain in Failed Back Surgery Patients with Multicolumn-lead Spinal Cord Stimulation. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the method of using multicolumn paddle lead spinal cord stimulation to manage chronic lower back pain in Failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS) patients. The pre-implanted lead delivers targeted electrical pulses that activate non-painful sensory pathways, interrupting pain signals and reducing pain perception.

Spinal cord injury is a traumatic medical condition that may result in elevated risks of chronic secondary metabolic disorders. Here, we presented a protocol using surface neuromuscular electrical stimulation-resistance training in conjunction with functional electrical stimulation-lower extremities cycling as a strategy to ameliorate several of these medical problems.
