Xenon Light Source

A xenon light source is an artificial illumination device that produces intense, broadband light by passing an electrical discharge through xenon gas, making it useful when experiments require stable, high-brightness illumination across many wavelengths. In neuroscience, the source typically directs selected wavelengths through optical filters, microscopes, or fiber-based systems, allowing researchers to excite fluorescent indicators, visualize neural structures, or deliver light for wavelength-dependent stimulation while controlling exposure conditions. Its broad spectrum and strong output support fluorescence microscopy, calcium-imaging workflows, optogenetic experiments, and other light-based measurements, helping researchers record neuronal activity and investigate circuit function with precise spatial and temporal control.

The production of hyperpolarized xenon by means of spin exchange optical pumping (SEOP) is described. This method yields a ~10000-fold enhancement of the nuclear spin polarization of Xe-129 and has applications in nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and imaging. Examples of gas phase and solution state experiments are given.
