Drug Potency

Drug potency is the amount of a drug required to produce a specified biological effect, making it a key concept for comparing pharmacological activity. It is commonly assessed from concentration-response or dose-response relationships, where a lower effective concentration or dose, often expressed as a lower EC50 or ED50, indicates greater potency; potency differs from efficacy, which describes the maximum effect a drug can produce. Pharmacologists use potency measurements to characterize drug-receptor interactions, compare therapeutic agents, and guide dose selection. These analyses support drug development, treatment optimization, and evaluation of how factors such as receptor affinity, signaling pathways, and biological conditions influence responses.

2016

Peptide adsorption to plasticware during traditional tip-based serial dilutions can significantly impact potency determination and confound the understanding of structure-activity relationships used for lead identification and lead optimization phases of drug discovery. Here methods for automated acoustic non-contact serial dilution of peptide samples are described.

Source And Potency Of Stem Cells

Stem cells are undifferentiated cells with extensive self-renewal properties that help them maintain their population during the fetal and adult stages of life. They can specialize in all cell types of the human body. However, their differential potential may vary and can be classified into five types. Stem cells can be (1) Totipotent, (2) Pluripotent, (3) Multipotent, (4) Oligopotent, and (5) Unipotent. Each stem cell has a specific origin; the fertilized egg or zygote is a totipotent cell and...

Dose-Response Relationship: Potency and Efficacy

2023

The potency of a drug is the measure of its ability to produce a biological response and can be compared by looking at the half-maximum effective concentration or EC50 values of different drugs. A lower EC50 value indicates higher potency of the drug. In the dose–response curve of two antihypertensive drugs, candesartan and irbesartan, a significant difference is observed in their EC50 values. A lower EC50 value for candesartan indicates that it is more potent than irbesartan, as it produces...
