Addiction Mechanisms

Addiction mechanisms are the biological and psychological processes that drive persistent substance use or compulsive behaviors despite harmful consequences. Repeated exposure can strengthen reward-based learning, alter motivation and stress responses, and produce neuroadaptations that increase craving, reduce perceived control, and promote continued use in the presence of cues or withdrawal. In psychology, studying these mechanisms helps explain how reinforcement, emotion regulation, decision-making, and environmental context interact in addiction. This knowledge supports more effective prevention, assessment, and treatment strategies, including interventions that address triggers, coping skills, motivation, and relapse risk.

An Introduction to Reward and Addiction

2023

Consequences play a major role in controlling our behavior. If the consequence is a reward, then it encourages the associated behavior. Rewards can come in many forms such as a pleasant feeling, money, or food. However, sometimes an individual engages in compulsive behavior despite of negative consequences, and this state is known as addiction. Administration of addictive substances is neurochemically rewarding, which ultimately causes a loss of control in limiting the intake. Scientists aim...

Deep Brain Stimulation as a Treatment for Drug Addiction in a Rat Model

2025

Source: Batra, V., et al. A General Method for Evaluating Deep Brain Stimulation Effects on Intravenous Methamphetamine Self-Administration. J. Vis. Exp. (2016).This video demonstrates a rat model of drug addiction in which the animal self-administers intravenous methamphetamine by pressing a lever, leading to compulsive drug-seeking behavior driven by dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens. To counteract this, the rat undergoes deep brain stimulation (DBS) via an implanted bipolar...

Drug Abuse and Addiction: Pharmacological Phenomena

2024

Drug dependence, abuse, and addiction are complex phenomena that can precipitate various abnormal states. Physical dependence refers to a state of pharmacological adaptation to a drug. This adaptation often results in tolerance—a reduced response to the drug after repeated administrations. When the drug use is abruptly stopped, withdrawal symptoms occur due to the body's need to readjust from the pharmacologically induced imbalance. However, tolerance and withdrawal symptoms do not necessarily...

The biosynthesis of cartilaginous extracellular matrix by chondrocytes can be affected by application of mechanical stimuli. This method describes the technique of applying dynamic compressive strains to chondrocytes encapsulated in 3D constructs and the evaluation of induced changes in chondrocyte metabolism.

Reaction Mechanisms

Chemical reactions often occur in a stepwise fashion, involving two or more distinct reactions taking place in a sequence. A balanced equation indicates the reacting species and the product species, but it reveals no details about how the reaction occurs at the molecular level. The reaction mechanism (or reaction path) provides details regarding the precise, step-by-step process by which a reaction occurs. For instance, the decomposition of ozone appears to follow a mechanism with two steps:
