This article details a procedure for inducing glaucoma in anesthetized rats by injecting hypertonic saline into the episcleral vein. The method aims to study the effects of increased intraocular pressure on retinal ganglion cells, which are crucial for visual information transmission.
Reliable in vivo glaucoma models are essential for early-stage ophthalmic drug discovery and mechanistic de-risking of neuroprotective strategies. The hypertonic saline injection technique enables controlled induction of elevated intraocular pressure, supporting target validation and translational continuity for retinal ganglion cell degeneration studies. This model underpins predictive confidence for preclinical candidate evaluation in neurodegenerative ocular pipelines.
This glaucoma induction model is positioned at the interface of early discovery and preclinical validation, enabling seamless progression from mechanistic studies to candidate screening.
