Muscles that Move the Head

Neck muscles guide head motion by working together to bend, turn, and lift the head. They help with rotation, flexion, extension, and lateral bending. The sternocleidomastoid, or SCM, plus the suprahyoid and infrahyoid muscles are major head flexors.

The SCM runs from the sternum and clavicle to the mastoid process of the temporal bone. When both SCM muscles contract, they bend the head forward. When only one side contracts, it bends the head toward that side or turns the head to the opposite side.

The back of the neck contains muscles that connect the skull to the spinal column and the pectoral girdle. These muscles are grouped into three layers. The superficial layer includes the trapezius, splenius capitis, and splenius cervicis.

The trapezius helps move the shoulder blades. It also assists in extending the head and tilting it backward. The splenius capitis and splenius cervicis start on the lower cervical and upper thoracic vertebrae. They insert into the skull and upper cervical vertebrae, and they work together to extend the head and neck.

The deep layer includes the cervical transversospinalis muscles. These include the semispinalis capitis, semispinalis cervicis, and multifidus cervicis. They run from the transverse processes of the vertebrae to the spinous processes of higher vertebrae or the occipital bone. The semispinalis capitis is especially important for extending and rotating the head, which helps with looking up and turning side to side.

The deepest layer includes the suboccipital muscles, interspinales cervicis, and intertransversarii colli muscles. The suboccipital muscles sit just below the occipital bone. They help with fine control of head position and proprioception, which is the sense of self-movement and body position.
