Axial and Appendicular Muscles

Skeletal muscles are mainly divided into two groups: the axial and the appendicular.
The axial muscles present along the body&#39;s midline are primarily connected with the head, neck, and trunk regions.
In the head and neck, axial muscles are vital for facial expressions, talking, eating, and various head movements.
Additionally, some neck muscles assist the posterior trunk muscles, commonly referred to as the back muscles, in the movements of the vertebral column.
The thoracic muscles, along with the abdominal muscles such as the rectus, oblique, and transverse, establish the anterolateral walls of the trunk.
Lastly, the lower axial skeleton has muscles that extend between the sacrum and pelvic girdle, creating the pelvic floor.
On the other hand, the appendicular muscles are those associated with the pectoral girdle, the pelvic girdle, and the limbs.
These muscles stabilize and support the moving structures during walking, running, and other physical activities.
Appendicular muscles related to the upper limb range from the shoulders to the hands, while the lower limb muscles range from the hips to the feet.

Axial Muscles
Axial muscles, situated along the body&#39;s midline, are intricately connected to the axial skeleton, which includes the skull, spine, ribs, and sternum. These muscles facilitate facial expressions and play a crucial role in various head and neck movements, speaking, and eating. They even contribute to controlling the movements of the vertebral column in coordination with the back muscles. Furthermore, the thoracic muscles, including the rectus, oblique, and transverse abdominal muscles, form the anterolateral walls of the trunk, offering stability and support. Additionally, the lower axial skeleton muscles extend between the sacrum and pelvic girdle, actively participating in forming the pelvic floor.
Appendicular Muscles
In contrast, appendicular muscles are predominantly associated with the pectoral girdle, pelvic girdle, and limbs. These muscles provide stability and support and actively contribute to the body&#39;s movement during activities like walking, running, and various physical actions. The upper limbs are equipped with muscles that extend from the shoulders down to the hands, enabling us to perform intricate tasks. Similarly, the lower limbs have muscles stretching from the hips to the feet, ensuring mobility and balance.

Skeletal muscles support movement and body structure. They are grouped into axial muscles and appendicular muscles based on where they are found and what they do.

Axial muscles lie along the body’s midline. They connect with the axial skeleton, which includes the skull, spine, ribs, and sternum. These muscles help with facial expressions, head and neck movement, speaking, and eating. They also help control movement of the vertebral column with the back muscles.

The trunk also contains thoracic muscles such as the rectus abdominis, oblique muscles, and transverse abdominal muscles. These muscles form the anterolateral walls of the trunk and add stability and support. Lower axial muscles extend between the sacrum and the pelvic girdle. They help form the pelvic floor.

Appendicular muscles are linked to the pectoral girdle, pelvic girdle, and limbs. They help stabilize these regions and power movement during activities like walking and running. The upper limb muscles run from the shoulders to the hands, which allows fine tasks. The lower limb muscles run from the hips to the feet, which supports mobility and balance.

Content elaboration: The integumentary system consists of skin and accessory structures. The skin is composed of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis (subcutaneous layer). The accessory structures can include sweat glands, sebaceous glands, arrector pili muscles, hair follicles and nails. Skin functions include protection, temperature regulation, excretion and sensory perception. These occur through the processes of perspiration, skin production and shedding, vitamin D synthesis and repair. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, burns, skin cancer, anhidrosis, acne, eczema or scleroderma. Investigations are used to understand and explain the integumentary system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.

There are four main cell types that compose bone tissue, each with a specific function: osteogenic cells, osteocytes, osteoblasts and osteoclasts. The microscopic anatomy of compact bone includes osteons. Bones are classified by their shape. The structure of a typical long bone can be explored. Specific bones of the skeleton can be studied by their subdivisions: the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. Cartilage is found in areas of the nose, ears, ribs and joints. Joints can be classified by structure or by function. The general structure of synovial joints may be explored. Ligaments connect bone to bone, stabilizing joints. The skeletal system provides support for the human body, protects soft organs, allows for movement due to attachment of muscles, stores minerals and fat and forms blood cells. Processes of the skeletal system include hematopoiesis, ossification and bone growth and remodeling. A comparison of male to female, juvenile to adult or human to other vertebrate skeletons may be explored. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, osteoporosis, malnutrition, fractures, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and arthritis. Investigations are used to understand and explain the skeletal system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
