Muscles for Facial Expressions

The muscles responsible for facial expressions usually originate in the fascia of deeper muscles or skull bones and insert into the skin.
As a result, any contraction in facial muscles moves the overlying skin and changes facial expressions.
For instance, the occipitofrontalis is a two-part scalp muscle. It has two muscular portions&#8212;frontal and occipital bellies&#8212;held together by the epicranial aponeurosis.
The opposing action of these two muscular parts is to pull the scalp forward and backward for expressions like lifting the eyebrows.
Other muscles that cover the facial bones control expressions by supporting the movement of the eyes, nose, cheeks, and mouth.
For example, the orbicularis oris is a circular muscle that originates from other muscles attached to the maxillae and mandible and inserts around the lips.
It also acts as the insertion for the buccinator, which also originates from the maxillae and mandible.&#160;
Together, these muscles control mouth movements, such as pouting and puckering.

The craniofacial muscles are a collection of approximately 20 thin skeletal muscles situated beneath the skin of the face and scalp. These muscles, primarily responsible for the vast array of human facial expressions, originate from the bones or fibrous structures of the skull and extend outwards to connect with the skin. While most skeletal muscles in the body are enveloped in thick fascia, facial muscles generally have a more delicate fascial covering, with the buccinator muscle being a notable exception.
These facial muscles are situated around the facial openings (mouth, eyes, nose, and ears) or span across the skull and neck and are crucial for non-verbal communication. They are aptly named muscles of facial expression or mimetic muscles due to their specific role in reflecting emotions and intentions. All facial muscles receive signals from the facial nerve, ensuring precise and coordinated movements, while the facial artery provides the necessary blood supply. However, the innervation and vascularization patterns can be complex and vary slightly between individuals.
For instance, the occipitofrontalis muscle, which plays a key role in lifting the eyebrows, is a two-part scalp muscle composed of frontal and occipital bellies. These parts are united by the epicranial aponeurosis, a tough layer of connective tissue. Another crucial muscle is the orbicularis oris, a circular muscle that encircles the mouth. It originates from adjacent muscles attached to the maxillae and mandible and inserts around the lips. It is also the insertion point for the buccinator muscle, which originates from the maxillae and mandible and controls mouth movements like pouting and puckering.
Additionally, muscles such as the zygomaticus major, responsible for pulling the corners of the mouth upward into a smile, and the corrugator supercilii, involved in frowning by drawing the eyebrows together, further exemplify the diversity and specificity of facial muscles. Along with others controlling the eyes, nose, and cheeks, these muscles orchestrate a symphony of expressions ranging from joy to sorrow.

Facial muscles shape human expression by moving the skin of the face and scalp. These craniofacial muscles are thin skeletal muscles that lie just beneath the skin. They help create the nonverbal signals people use to show emotion and intention.

There are about 20 of these muscles. Most begin on bones or fibrous parts of the skull and then extend outward to attach to the skin. They are called muscles of facial expression, or mimetic muscles, because they reflect feelings through movement.

Facial muscles usually have a delicate fascial covering. Fascia is a layer of connective tissue that surrounds muscles. The buccinator is a notable exception, and it has a different, more prominent covering.

These muscles sit around the openings of the face, including the mouth, eyes, nose, and ears. Some also span across the skull and neck. Their actions are coordinated by the facial nerve, and the facial artery supplies blood, although these patterns can vary slightly from person to person.

Several facial muscles show how specific their jobs are. The occipitofrontalis is a two-part scalp muscle with frontal and occipital bellies joined by the epicranial aponeurosis, a tough connective layer. It helps lift the eyebrows. The orbicularis oris circles the mouth and attaches around the lips, while the buccinator helps with mouth movements such as pouting and puckering.

Other muscles create familiar expressions. The zygomaticus major pulls the corners of the mouth upward in a smile. The corrugator supercilii draws the eyebrows together in a frown. Together with muscles that move the eyes, nose, and cheeks, these muscles produce a wide range of expressions, from joy to sorrow.
