Naming Skeletal Muscles

Skeletal muscle names are based on various factors, such as location, physical traits, and functions.
Often, muscle names indicate their location. For example, &#39;brachium&#39; refers to the arm. So the name biceps brachii suggests its location in the arm.
Additionally, the prefix &#39;biceps&#39; in its name points to the two origins of the biceps brachii in the scapula.
The deltoid is a triangular-shaped shoulder muscle and derives its name from its resemblance to the Greek letter delta.
When attachment points are used for naming, the origin comes before insertion. For example, the muscle originating from the styloid process of the temporal bone and inserting into the body of the hyoid is called stylohyoid muscle.
Some muscle names refer to the fascicle orientation within them. For instance, the prefix rectus in the rectus femoris muscle indicates that its fascicles run parallel to the longitudinal axis of the femur.
Lastly, muscle names can also be based on their size and function. For instance, the adductor longus is a long muscle at the hip joint that helps in leg adduction.

Muscles that position or stabilize an organ are called &#39;extrinsic&#39;, while those located entirely within an organ are &#39;intrinsic&#39;.</li>
	<li>Direction: Some muscles are named according to the direction in which they run relative to the body&#39;s longitudinal axis. &#39;Transversus&#39; refers to muscles running across this axis, while &#39;oblique&#39; denotes muscles running at a slanting angle.</li>
	<li>Fascicle Arrangement: The term &#39;rectus&#39; is used for muscles with straight fascicles running along their longitudinal axis. For example, &#39;rectus abdominis&#39; refers to a muscle in the abdomen with straight fascicles.</li>
	<li>Structural Characteristics: Some muscles are named after their distinctive structural features, such as the number of tendons of origin, shape, and size. For example, &#39;biceps brachii&#39; has two tendons of origin, &#39;trapezius&#39; is trapezoid-shaped, and &#39;longus&#39; refers to long muscles.</li>
	<li>Origin and Insertion: Many muscle names indicate the specific origin and insertion points. For example, the &#39;genioglossus&#39; originates at the chin or &#39;geneion&#39; and inserts in the tongue or &#39;glossus&#39;.</li>
	<li>Action: Many muscles are named after their primary function or action, such as flexor, extensor, pronator, abductor, adductor, and rotator.</li>
	<li>Particular Occupations or Habits: A few muscles carry names related to specific movements associated with certain occupations or habits. For instance, the &#39;buccinator&#39; compresses the cheeks as if blowing a trumpet, and the &#39;sartorius&#39;, the longest muscle in the body, is active when crossing legs, reminiscent of a tailor&#39;s sitting position.</li>

Skeletal muscle names are built from features that help identify each muscle. The names of the roughly 700 muscles in the human body can point to where a muscle is found, what it looks like, or how it works. That makes the names easier to learn and remember.

Many muscle names describe the region of the body. The temporalis muscle is in the head region, while the brachialis is in the arm. Other names describe position and depth. Muscles near the surface may be called externus or superficialis, while deeper muscles may be called internus or profundus.

Some names also show where a muscle sits in relation to an organ. Muscles that help position or support an organ are called extrinsic. Muscles located entirely within an organ are called intrinsic. Direction is another clue. Transversus means the muscle runs across the body's long axis, and oblique means it runs at a slant.

Muscle names can also describe the arrangement of muscle fibers, or fascicles. Rectus is used for muscles with straight fascicles that run along the long axis, such as the rectus abdominis. Other names point to structure. Biceps brachii has two tendons of origin, trapezius has a trapezoid shape, and longus refers to a long muscle.

Some muscle names show where a muscle starts and ends. Genioglossus begins at the chin, or geneion, and inserts into the tongue, or glossus. Others describe action, such as flexor, extensor, pronator, abductor, adductor, and rotator. A few names even reflect habits or occupations. The buccinator compresses the cheeks as if blowing a trumpet, and the sartorius is linked to the tailor's crossed-leg sitting position.

Content elaboration: The integumentary system consists of skin and accessory structures. The skin is composed of three layers: the epidermis, the dermis and the hypodermis (subcutaneous layer). The accessory structures can include sweat glands, sebaceous glands, arrector pili muscles, hair follicles and nails. Skin functions include protection, temperature regulation, excretion and sensory perception. These occur through the processes of perspiration, skin production and shedding, vitamin D synthesis and repair. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, burns, skin cancer, anhidrosis, acne, eczema or scleroderma. There are four main cell types that compose bone tissue, each with a specific function: osteogenic cells, osteocytes, osteoblasts and osteoclasts. The microscopic anatomy of compact bone includes osteons. Bones are classified by their shape. The structure of a typical long bone can be explored. Specific bones of the skeleton can be studied by their subdivisions: the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. Cartilage is found in areas of the nose, ears, ribs and joints. Joints can be classified by structure or by function. The general structure of synovial joints may be explored. Ligaments connect bone to bone, stabilizing joints. The skeletal system provides support for the human body, protects soft organs, allows for movement due to attachment of muscles, stores minerals and fat and forms blood cells. Processes of the skeletal system include hematopoiesis, ossification and bone growth and remodeling. A comparison of male to female, juvenile to adult or human to other vertebrate skeletons may be explored. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, osteoporosis, malnutrition, fractures, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries and arthritis.
