Preferential Looking Test

The Preferential Looking Test is a behavioral method that infers visual discrimination, perception, or preference from where and how long an individual looks at competing stimuli. Typically used with infants or nonverbal participants, the test presents paired images or patterns while observers or cameras record gaze direction and duration; longer looking toward one stimulus suggests that the participant detects a difference or finds it more visually engaging. Researchers use this approach to study early visual development, attention, recognition, and perceptual abilities when verbal responses are unavailable. Its noninvasive design also supports comparisons across developmental stages and behavioral conditions.

A reliable home-based way to assess the language comprehension of very young typically developing children, as well as those with autism, is described. The method analyzes children's eye gaze while viewing side-by-side images but hearing an audio that matches only one image. Stimuli are designed with young participants in mind.

Here, we present a protocol to use a curvelet transform-based, open-source MATLAB software tool for quantifying fibrillar collagen organization in the extracellular matrix of both normal and diseased tissues. This tool can be applied to images with collagen fibers or other types of line-like structures.

This method aims at locating vertical subsurface defects. Here, we couple a laser with a spatial light modulator and trigger its video input to heat a sample surface deterministically with two anti-phased modulated lines while acquiring highly resolved thermal images. The defect position is retrieved from evaluating thermal wave interference minima.
